Time Project 2009

Last year we did a project about Time.  We made a time line of what we all do over 24 hours. We also did a pie chart that showed how the day was split into activities.  We had to do lots of maths to work it out.  Our time line strip was 172 cm long and 8 cm high and 6 cm per hour.

To finish off our time project we decided to make clocks. We all chose something different for our clock designs.  We had to do some maths to work out the clock size and we did a worksheet to work out where the hours and segments would go.  We used a protractor, compass and a calculator. There are 360° in a circle and 12 hours makes 30° for each hour.  Kate

Christmas Still Life Photos

We make our own Christmas cards every year and last year we decided to experiment with photography.  We each thought of lots of Christmassy things and chose a still life subject to photograph.  We had to learn to use the new camera and we learned about different settings and how to take close up photos.  We learned about Macro photography which lets you get really close up to see detail and textures.  We practised using the tripod and different ways of lighting our objects.  Most of us used the timer on the camera along with the tripod to make sure our photos were not blurry.  It was great fun and we plan to do more photography this year.

The Four Seasons
This year we did some work about The Four Seasons for our Spring Display. We all thought of some pictures that could represent the Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter.  I chose lambs, sunbathing, pumpkins and warm clothes for my pictures.  We chose colour schemes for the different seasons like oranges and browns for Autumn.  Sue drew shadows of our faces so we could choose a face to blow the Autumn wind., and some of us had a go at guessing our faces.  We have apple trees on our allotment so we made 4 apple trees for the seasons with blossom, apples, autumn leaves and bare branches. We made vegetables growing at different stages for each season.   Nicky

3D Plaster Work 2008

Our art and craft projects this year have been about 3D. We looked at Sculptures around the city. We looked at the Elephants when they were visiting and all chose a favourite one. We had a go at making moulds of our hands using play dough. Then we used plaster to make a model of our hands and we all made faces too. We had to make a mould first using all sorts of things to make the features. Then we filled it with plaster. We painted our hands and faces.  We have also made 3D picture frames out of plaster.  One student made his into a thermometer for a Mediterranean Garden.

Making Felt Bags and Cushions

“Last year we all did some felt making with Sue. This year we decided to make bags with our felt squares on the front of our bags. We did different backgrounds  to our bags. Some of us made cushions instead. We picked different designs for our bags. We picked different colours of the materials for our bags.  We all used the sewing machine. It was the best project we have done. Some of us enjoyed making our bags. We have done our bags now. They are really good bags.”  Heidi

“I made a cushion with my felt picture with seals. I chose a blue fabric. Sue helped me sew my cushion on the sewing machine. The cushions were put on display in the foyer. I stuffed my cushion with white cotton wadding.  When I take it home I will put it on my bed. I am very pleased with my cushion that I made.”  Nicky

The 12 Days of Christmas Stepping Stones Style

Our Christmas art project  was The Twelve Days Of Christmas (According to Stepping Stones). We all helped to re-write the words to the carol with our own list of presents. We had everything from Twelve Jars of Chutney to A Plate of Scrumptious Cheese Straws. We had to think of things that had the same number of syllables as the original verses. We made models for each verse using different things like card, paint and paper maché. We were all involved in making the models and I helped to make the jars of chutney for the last verse, with Chris. We recorded the song too. We used a microphone and sang the song. We did different verses and some people were brave enough to do solos. The staff sang too. The final song was mixed on the computers and we decided to make it all into a DVD with us singing the song to the pictures.  Sang

Felt Making

Our project for Summer was textiles. We looked at different fibres used in fabrics from animals, plants and manmade. We looked at the uses of textiles and we did a survey around the building. We found lots of objects made from textiles and we looked at fibres through a microscope, they look really good. Wool was different from the other fibres as it was scaly – it’s the only fibre that will felt. All other fibres are spun together to make threads which can either be knitted or woven to make cloth. Felt is great you can cut it and it won’t fray and you can shape it to make patterns and pictures. We decided to make felt squares with pictures.  Kate

Christmas Bowls

In November we decided to make bowls to put sweets in for Christmas. Some of us brought in our own bowl from home. We made them with paper maché and it took several turns to get them right with different glues. We put about 5 layers on the bowls to get them strong. We then had to think what we were going to put on our bowls for a design. We have all done our designs as either patterns or pictures. The bowls were all varnished and we took them home as Christmas gifts with sweets in to give to our families or friends. All the bowls looked great.   Kate

Wild Flower Project

This year we decided to do a wild flower project. We learned about how plants breath and make food as well as looking closely at all the different parts of flowers. Some of us went to the library to get books on wild flowers. Sue put different colours in a box so we could pick out which colour flower to do.  I am doing a white wild flower called Greater Stitchwort. I drew my stems and leaves on a big piece of paper. We coloured our first pictures with pencil and now we are doing some really large pictures. We have to look very carefully to get all the details right. Rock Boxes

Using the ideas we saw in the Castle Museum we printed paper in a rock effect. To get the effect we used all sorts of things, like special paint brushes, tissue and sponges. Some looks like Malachite and some like Lapis. One of the objects in the exhibition was a beautiful cabinet decorated with inlaid precious stones to look like it was landscapes on each panel. This is what we used as our idea for our Rock Boxes.

Art at the Rock Face

We went to Norwich Castle Museum to see an exhibition called Art at the Rock Face. It was all about how Rocks are used in art and design. We saw jewellery, ornate books, furniture, sculpture and paintings. This visit led us on to talk about how rocks are made. We learned about igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. We talked about how the earth was made and also about other planets. We looked at how crystals are formed and did an experiment with salt. We made pipe cleaner models and stood them in a strong salt solution to see how the crystals would form.

Digital Art

We’ve been putting our artistic skills to good use in ICT, by learning to use some new software. We made patterns using Felt tip pens. Using the Scanner that we bought with help from the BBC Radio Norfolk Listeners Helpline, we transferred our patterns to the computer. We changed the HUE (Colour) and used warping effects to change the pattern.  The pictures on the right show one pattern before and after the application of the digital effects.

Lantern Making

We have been working with some new people lately. We have been involved in making lanterns for the Waterway Arts Trail event taking place at the end of May. Sue and Charlotte (from the Making Marks project) came to show us how to make them. They will be floated down the river at night on the 26th May. We all had a great time making the lanterns.  We had to use environment friendly materials, so they would not harm the fish and other things that live in the river. The lanterns will look lovely floating down the river.

You can see all our lanterns in the Click here for a Slideshow of our lanterns

Beautiful British Butterflies

We decided to make  butterflies for the Spring display. We went to the library to find some books and we found lots. There were so many books that we made page references so that we could find the information easily when we needed it.  We all chose a different butterfly.  I chose a Tortoiseshell.  We traced the shape out of the book and used the projector to enlarge them and drew round them again. We drew in the shapes and patterns.  We coloured them using felt tips, pencils, paints and crayon. We did both sides of the butterflies.  Then we cut them out and stuck them together.  We had to pay close attention to the shape of the body and the wing shape and the colour and pattern.

Our Veggie Survey

We have been doing a vegetable survey, because when we are cooking we keep forgetting which vegetables people like and dislike.

So Sue took us to the library, to get some books on different vegetables. We did a list of different vegetables and if we like a vegetable we put a tick in the box, a cross if we don’t like it and a question mark if not sure. Sue gave us some question sheets on how many people liked the vegetables. Carrots were the most popular. Then we put the vegetables into different categories -

Roots and shoots, fruit, seeds plants, stalks, leaves, and flowers. We had to choose three vegetables, I chose Broccoli, Fennel and Swede and I drew them. I used paint and pastel crayons to colour my vegetables. When we finish our vegetables, they will be varnished and mounted on paper ready to be displayed.

You can see the rest of our vegetable drawings in the Flickr Slide Show

Self Portraits

One of the projects we have being doing lately is self portraits. Here’s what I did...

First I drew myself as I thought I looked from memory. It was very difficult. Afterwards I used a mirror to draw myself and this looks more like me.

Then I drew Sue.   I did a

pencil drawing and then I coloured it with oil pastels & did the background purple. Finally I made the big portrait of myself using every thing I had learned. This one was painted carefully.  Then I had to make the frame. We went to the castle to look around at picture frames and the different designs. I drew different shapes and patterns. I chose a diamond shape and it is a good design. I liked it because it was simple and plain but striking in its effect. I cut each diamond out of card bent it in the middle and only glued the middle fold, so the sides stick up. Sue sprayed it gold afterwards. We put the portraits up in the window and foyer for everyone to see.       Sang
